Who is a good candidate for a breast augmentation? Women who are not satisfied with their current size and feel that their breasts are very small for their body proportion; also those ones who have lost firmness, due a loss of weight or after breast-feed.

What does the consultation consist of? During the first consultation, Doctor Andres Mejia evaluates the general state of health, skin quality, nipple and areola location, and determines if the patient is suitable or not to complete the procedure. Expectations are defined with regard if the size desired can be achieved; type, size and location of the prostheses are also defined, all doubts are clarified, procedure and type of anesthesia are explained, same as the institution clinic where the intervention will be carried out. In the same way, if patient intends to become pregnant* or will intend to have a significant weight lost. In this first consultation the patient should report to the physician any kind of antecedent, illness or symptom related to the breasts.

  • There is not evidence that the prosthesis affect the pregnancy or the capacity to nursing.

¿Which are the prosthesis that will be used? There are three types of prosthesis: silicone, saline solution and hydrogel.  The silicones ones are more utilized because have better consistency and they offer the most natural result respecting the form and touch.

How is the procedure carried out? Augmentation Mammoplasty is an ambulatory surgery that has duration from 1 to 2 hours.  It can be carried out with general or local anesthesia, controlled by an anesthesiologist that previously values the patient with specific laboratory exams.  Prosthesis can be placed in two spaces: under the gland above the muscle or under the greater pectoral muscle.  There are three main sites where incisions can be done: in the lower part of the areola, in the lower mammary fold and in the armpit.  This is determined by Doctor Mejía jointly with the patient during the first consultation and according to the physical valuation.  The patient is marked before entering to surgery to define the access way, generally through the areola; also to mark the margins of the mammary pocket where the prosthesis will be placed.  Once at the surgery room, the anesthesiologist prepares the patient in order to administrate the anesthesia.  Once the patient is anesthetized, a surgical wash is completed.

Surgery starts with the areola lower half incision or an incision in the place established. A pocket behind the breast is created through this way; also the prosthesis could be placed behind the pectoral muscle, where it will be lodged.  The implant is carefully introduced through the incision until enters totality into the space and stays lodged in a proper way in the space created.
The injury closes with various deep suture stitches, these stitches are reabsorbed spontaneously, and the skin closes with a continuous suture of nylon, which is withdrawn 10 or 12 days later.  The injury is covered with a paper court-plaster and around the breast in order "to mold" and to fix the prosthesis externally. A special brassier should be used during 6 weeks.
The patient is transferred to the recovery room where remains from 1 to 2 hours and then she can return to her house.

¿Which are the augmentation breasts surgery risks? Some of the complications are:

  • anesthesia reactions
  • infection; and
  • Accumulation of blood.

After the surgery changes in the sensibility of the nipple or the breast can be present although generally they are temporary.  Capsular contraction is another of the risks.  It occurs when the tissue scar or the capsule that normally is formed in around the implant swells and presses the implant.  Generally appears after infection, hematoma and seroma.  With saline solution prosthesis breaks can be presented and when this occurs the content is absorbed inoffensively by the body.  Doctor Mejía counts on a multidisciplinary team of professional experts and the appropriate installations making those risks minimum.

How the patient should be prepared for the surgery? It is indispensable to attend accompanied to the procedure and days before not to consume cigarette, aspirins or any type of anti-inflammatory.

How is post surgery? Result is immediate.  Certain rest during 3 or 4 days is recommended.  After this time the patient can drive and return to work. During 15 days to do big efforts or to raise heavy objects should be avoided, especially the movement of the arms.  Since the first moment there are not bandages and the patient wears the bra size desired. Sexual activity should be avoided at least during the first week following the surgery.

Which will be the results? Augmentation mamoplasty will do that the patient shows off some fuller breasts and will enlarge the size with lasting and immediate results.

Note: There is not scientific evidence that the augmentation mammoplasty increase the risk of breast cancer.
