¿Who can receive a Mentoplasty? People that have a very large or very small chin seen them selves disproportionate in relation to the size of the face. 

What does the consultation consist of? In the first consultation, the Doctor Andrés Mejía evaluates the general state of health, analyzes the case and defines the class of procedure that will carry out.  All doubts are clarified, expectations are defined; procedure and type of anesthesia are explained, same as the institution clinic where the intervention will be carried out.

How is the procedure carried out?  If the surgery is a chin augmentation different techniques can be used such as the implantation of a prosthesis in the chin or though the infiltration of greasy tissue of the patient.  If it is a chin reduction, techniques such as osteotomy will be considered, which consists in to sand a section of the jaw bone, completing small incisions inside the mouth.

Augmentation: an incision inside the mouth can be done, in the rut between the gum and the bottom lip (intraoral way), or also a small incision in the skin under the chin, seemed to that one used in the lower 1/3 facelift or neck lifting (external way).  The placement is carried out through a small incision in the mucous membrane, or in the skin under the chin, with local anesthesia and in ambulatory regimen. 
Reduction:  Through an incision located inside the mouth a sanding of the bone is performed (osteotomy).  The osteotomy permits to advance, to shorten and to tighten the jaw.  It is important to identify possible asymmetries or differentiate of form or size between one side of the face and the other one. 
The interventions can be done with general anesthesia or with local anesthesia plus sedation, and the time of stay can only for some hours if is performed ambulatory, or one day if enters in the clinic. 

In some determined cases with defects very accentuated, in which treatments described above are required with sections of the jaw bone, more days of hospitalization can be necessary.  In this type of intervention, it is contraindicated the immediate post surgery massage. This massage could cause the mobilization of the material implanted.  After the intervention it could be necessary to immobilize the zone by means of a court-plaster dressing that will be withdrawn after a few days. 

¿Which are the chin surgery risks? Some of the complications are displacement of the implant, cartilage infection that can cause formation of healing tissue and anesthesia reactions. Doctor Mejía counts on a multidisciplinary team of professional experts and the appropriate installations making those risks minimum.

How the patient should be prepared for the surgery? Be accompanied to the procedure is a must and days before not to consume cigarette, aspirins or any type of anti-inflammatory. Doctor Andrés Mejía will indicate you pre surgery additional instructions.

How is post surgery? Return to work and regular activity is permitted among the 7 to 10 days after the surgery and generally the external bandage is withdrawn a week after the intervention. 

Which will be the results? The patient will see the surgery result immediately.  Nevertheless after the first week he/she will be able to enjoy his/her new appearance. This appearance will be more natural each day. Results are permanent.  It is important to have into account that the relationship physician-patient does not have an end once the surgery is finished.  In great measure, the right post surgery management that be given, will depend the final result of the chin surgery.
