¿Who can receive an otoplasty? Normally this surgery is carried out in children between 4 and 14 years old; how ever, also can be practiced in adults. 

What does the consultation consist of? In the first consultation, Doctor Andrés Mejía evaluates the general state of health, analyzes the case and defines the class of procedure that will carry out.  All doubts are clarified, expectations are defined; desired issues for the improvement; procedure and type of anesthesia are explained, same as the institution clinic where the intervention will be carried out.

How is the procedure carried out?  The otoplasty is an ambulatory surgery that can be carried out under local or general anesthesia.  It has an average duration of 2 hours.  A small incision behind the ear seeking is completed to hide the scars, the auricular cartilage is exposed and excess of cartilage is withdrawn or is carved, so the ear can be plaited more and be directed backwards in a natural position and near to the head.  Some internal permanent stitches are utilized (not visible), to help to maintain the new form and shape of the ear. 
Another technique involves likewise a similar incision behind the ear, the skin is also removed, but without eliminating the cartilage.  In this case a rut in the cartilage is created and then sutures are utilized to plait and to fold the cartilage on it self, obtaining thus a new position. 
The stitches are withdrawn after 10 days on average. 

¿Which are the ears surgery risks? Some of the complications are clots of blood in the ears, infection in the cartilage that can cause formation of healing tissue and anesthesia reactions.  Doctor Mejía counts on a multidisciplinary team of professional experts and the appropriate installations making those risks minimum.

How the patient should be prepared for the surgery? Be accompanied to the procedure is a must and days before not to consume cigarette, aspirins or any type of anti-inflammatory. Doctor Andrés Mejía will indicate you pre surgery additional instructions.

How is post surgery? Most of the patients, children and adult, are found well in a few hours after the surgery, although can be recommendable to remain a night in the clinic until the effects of the general anesthesia disappear.  When the surgery is completed a bandage around the head is placed.  The ears can hurt a little during the first days, but this pain is alleviated easily with medicine.  In few days the bandage is changed for another one lighter seemed to a tape of hair.  During the first month any activity where ears can be folded should be avoided.  Most of adults return to work at the 5th day after the surgery; children return to school at the 7th day, provided that physical activities are carefully watched over. 

Which will be the results? The patient will see the surgery results immediately.  Nevertheless after the first week he/she will be able to enjoy his/her new appearance. This appearance will be more natural each day. Results are permanent.  It is important to have into account that the relationship physician-patient does not have an end once the surgery is finished.  In great measure, the right post surgery management that be given, will depend the final result of the chin surgery.
