¿Who can receive a Blepharoplasty? People that have an excess of skin in the eyelids and eventually can intervene with the deterioration of the vision; those ones who have an appearance of tired eyes or aged, or if presents wrinkles and dark rings round eyes with bags under the lower eyelids.

What does the consultation consist of? During the first consultation, Doctor Andres Mejia evaluates the general state of health and determines if the patient is suitable or not to complete the procedure. All doubts are clarified, success of expectations is defined; procedure and type of anesthesia are explained, same as the institution clinic where the intervention will be carried out.

The technique recommended will depend on factors such as the quantity of grease and skin to be extracted, eyebrows position and condition of the muscles around the eyelids.

How is the procedure carried out? Each case is unique and therefore it is recommendable that the patient, under Doctor Andrés Mejía advisory, selects jointly the surgical technique with which better results will be obtained. For the surgery of the upper eyelid, the quantity that corresponds to the surplus skin is drawing.  It should be kept in mind that fallen eyebrows only can be fixed with a front lifting.  The scar remains just in the fold of the eyelid.  For the lower eyelid the classical technique consists of carrying out an incision just under the eyelashes in a way that the scar remains completely hidden.

Another option is to use the transconjuntival technique that consists in the extraction of the lower bags through an incision inside the eyelid, in a way that does not remain any external scar.  It is advisable to complement the surgery by applying Botox, in order to deactivate the muscles that produce wrinkles in the eyes ("crow's feet").  After some hours the patient will be able to go home.

¿Which are the eyelid surgery risks? Some of the complications are bleeding, infection and anesthesia reactions.
Doctor Mejía counts on a multidisciplinary team of professional experts and the appropriate installations making those risks minimum.

How the patient should be prepared for the surgery? Be accompanied to the procedure is a must and days before not to consume cigarette, aspirins or any type of anti-inflammatory.

How is post surgery?  When the surgery is finished eyes will receive a pomade to lubricate them, and in some cases, a smooth bandage will be placed.  Irritation on the eyelids can be present but are alleviated easily with medicine.  The first days it is recommended to maintain the head elevated and to apply cold compresses, to reduce the inflammation and the hematomas.  The eyes should be washed carefully.

At the beginning excessive shed, hypersensitivity to the light and temporary changes in the visual sharpness, such as blurry or double vision, can be experimented. These ones are normal effects that will disappear progressively. The stitches are withdrawn between the 2 and 8 following days.  The edema and the hematomas will diminish gradually until disappearing completely, making that the patient sees and feels her/him self much better.
Most of the people that submit them selves to a Blepharoplasty begin to read or to watch television in 2 or 3 days.  How ever, they will not be able to use lenses until past 2 weeks, and even so they can be felt uncomfortable during a period of time.  It is recommendable to maintain a relative rest during 3 to 5 days and to avoid strong activities during 3 weeks.  Return to work can be after a week or 10 days, avoiding the direct contact with the sun.

Which will be the results? The patient will see the surgery result after 3 or 4 weeks although the true change only will be appreciated after six months.  This eyes zone will have the skin more firm giving the patient a younger appearance.  Results of the Blepharoplasty are maintained for various years and in many cases they are permanent.
